What level of UKHab training is this course?

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is aimed at professional ecologists with some experience in habitat survey and assessment. The course will consider the use of UKHab in a planning and development context.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

Participants should already be familiar with the UKHab classification and may have attended an online course. Participants should be registered users of UKHab (you can register here).

All participants are expected to have a copy of the UKHab classification and resources to refer to during the course.

What does the course cover?

The course introduces UKHab and describes approaches to desk-based and field mapping, the importance of pre-survey preparation and how to map features using polygons, points and lines. We will focus on woodland, grassland, heathland and scrub habitats and how to characterise these in the field.

The course is not designed to cover habitat recording specifically for BNG Statutory Metric or habitat condition assessment, but elements of these will be touched upon.

Learning outcomes

  • Gain further knowledge of the structure of UKHab and its resources.
  • Confidently identify and map UKHab using digital data and in the field.
  • Understand the importance of survey planning and design.
  • Interpret UKHab data and prepare a UKHab report for planning applications and monitoring land use change.
  • Using the Habitat Field Key and other UKHab resources to aid the identification of habitats typical of the Peak District.
  • Identify and describe habitat features using the Secondary Codes.
