Who is this course suitable for?

Ecologists and consultants involved in designing or delivering nature conservation policy and actions who wish to use UKHab to survey and assess existing and potential areas of importance.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

No. Some knowledge or experience of other habitat classifications would be useful.

What does the course cover?

The UKHab hierarchical structure and secondary coding are described. The UKHab use of combined codes for robust biodiversity assessment is explored. Attendees are asked to do some simple identification and mapping of high biodiversity-value sites using the coding system. Examples of Protected Area maps are shown with suggested typology. The uses of UKHab in nature conservation practice are discussed.

  • Understand the structure of UKHab Version 2.0.
  • Identify and describe habitat features using Primary and Secondary Codes.
  • Understand the relationship of UKHab codes to systems used to evaluate biodiversity.
  • Understand how to use UKHab for assessing and monitoring important habitats.
  • Build the skills required to identify and map high biodiversity value habitat types.
  • Awareness of UKHab applications in nature conservation practice.

How is this course delivered?

This online course runs over two days. Each day consists of a 3-hour session starting at 10 a.m. Between the two sessions, participants will be asked to complete a short task, which should take about an hour.
