What Level of UKHab Training is this course?

Beginners and Intermediate.

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is predominantly aimed at individuals with little or no experience of recording habitats. It is suitable for students or those who have just qualified as well as those with some experience of other habitat classifications now switching to using UKHab.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

No. This course will often be completed before attending an online intermediate course such as Introduction to UKHab for Practitioners.

What does the course cover?

The UK Habitat Classification (“UKHab”) will be introduced with a focus on broad and primary habitats in the Primary Habitat hierarchy as well as the frequently used secondary codes. Habitat identification and mapping will be practiced in field visits to a range of habitats on the University Campus and upland fringe on the nearby Ochil Hills.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the structure of UKHab.
  2. Identify and describe UKHab (Version 2.0) habitat features using Primary and Secondary Codes.
  3. Map area, linear and point habitat features in the field.
  4. Awareness of how frequently encountered habitats in lowland and upland Scotland are mapped.
  5. Understand how habitat survey can form the basis of conservation action plans.
