Who is this course suitable for?

Landscape architects seeking to enhance their understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles and the practical use of the UKHab classification system in nature conservation projects.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

No. Some knowledge or experience of other habitat classifications would be useful. Participants may have used UKHab in the field or received UKHab data and reports using UKHab.

What does the course cover?

The course equips participants with the foundational knowledge and skills to apply BNG principles in landscape design. It provides an overview of the UKHab classification system, focusing on its practical application in planning and creating ecologically beneficial projects. Attendees will learn to integrate BNG strategies into their designs, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations while enhancing biodiversity.

Learning outcomes

  • Outline the concepts and framework for BNG in the UK, with a focus on Statutory Biodiversity Gain in England.
  • Describe the relationship between UKHab and Biodiversity Metric habitat types.
  • Outline BNG design considerations:
    • Habitat types
    • Mapping areas, lines and point features
    • Habitat condition
    • Aftercare, habitat management and habitat monitoring.
  • Good practice for reports and drawings.
  • Self-led study: ‘habitat bank’ design using statutory metric or UKHab planting specification or case study BNG planning stage design.

How is this course delivered?

This online course runs over two days. Each day consists of a 3-hour session starting at 2 p.m. Between the two sessions, participants will be asked to complete a short task, which should take about an hour.
