What level of UKHab training is this course?

Beginners

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is predominantly aimed at individuals with little or no experience in habitat mapping. It has been designed for students or those who have just qualified.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

No. However, participants will normally have completed the companion course – UKHab Introduction to Habitat Identification – first.

What does the course cover?

The requirements of habitat mapping in the field, such as allocation of a single identified habitat to an area or linear feature, will be explained. The need for rigour and the approach to deciding boundaries between habitats will be covered. Examples of UKHab maps in different landscapes will be shown and discussed.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand how to translate observations of habitats in the field into maps.
  • Awareness of differences in habitat maps between urban, lowland and upland landscapes.
  • Understanding how to handle common mapping challenges, such as mosaics and the separation of area and linear features.
  • Awareness of how UKHab mapping protocols can help in producing useful habitat maps.

How is this course delivered?

This 3-hour course is delivered online. The start time is 10 a.m. (except for the April course, which begin at 2 p.m.).
