What level of UKHab training is this course?

Beginners

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is predominantly aimed at individuals with little or no experience in recording habitats. It has been designed for students or those who have just qualified. The ability to recognise at least some common plants, trees and shrubs will be assumed.

Do I need to have used UKHab already?

No. This course will often be completed before its companion course – UKHab Introduction to Habitat Mapping.

What does the course cover?

The course starts with a discussion of what habitats are and the features used to differentiate between habitat types. The UK Habitat Classification (“UKHab”) Version 2.0 will be introduced with a focus on ecosystems and broad habitats in the Primary Habitat hierarchy. Examples of common habitats will be shown, and their main features will be explained.

  • Understand what habitats are and how they can be classified.
  • Awareness of the skills needed to identify habitats at various levels of detail.
  • Familiarity with many Broad habitat types frequently found across the UK and their main characteristics.
  • Understand how UKHab is structured to enable surveyors with limited experience to capture useful and relevant habitat data.

How is this course delivered?

This 3-hour course is delivered online. The start time is 10 a.m. (except for the March courses, which begin at 2 p.m.).
